so last night was parent teacher conferences. so much different than last year, when my eyes would tear up as the teacher described a smart but aloof little boy who couldn't make eye contact and would drift off in class all the time. this year, the teacher describes a smart, creative kid who is motivated to keep doing better, has lots of friends and likes to get involved as long as the subject matter keeps him interested. schwew. what a difference a year makes.

now onto the funny part. his teacher was telling me that she has noticed a few bad habits with my son that concern her. she said, "if he drops a piece of popcorn on the floor, he'll just pick it up and eat it."

blank, confused look from Mother of the Year.

"and the other day, he dropped his fork at lunch and just picked it up like he was going to use it again!"

i try to look horrified, but inside i'm totally laughing. why wouldn't a kid who shares his breakfast with the cat use his fork once it's dropped on the floor?

i guess i never thought about teaching him "public manners" stuff. it's not like i let my sons blow snot on their sleeves (much) but if a cookie falls on the floor, it's a race between the dog and the kids. may the best man/beast win.

so, i'm feeling a bit like a loser. i sure don't want my kid to be known as the little pig with no manners. so i guess i better step it up. no more dipping a finger in the brownie batter. no more reaching over to eat a french fry off someone else's plate. and if there's an M&M hidden in the couch cushions, it's trash, not treasure.

once i have all these hard new rules mastered, i'll pass them down. wish me luck....hee hee.

Yippee! I'm so happy for your good reports! Good luck with the manners. It's my experience that as long as the husband does it, the boys will do it, too. I know, not exactly encouraging, but think of all the time I'm saving you. :-)

How's the fever?

Man, some people just know how to take away the fun in life! This post is hilarious, because I KNOW it comes from you! Maybe don't do away with the floor treasures all together, but instead started talking about how at home the 5 second rule applies, but in public we have a different rule. It will take some practice, but you all can do it, even you!:)

Hooray for you, a positive conference or even comment can make all the difference in the world. Wow-if that is all she had to comment on-manners-count yourself lucky. Trust me those same food/manner faux pas happen here all the time! Sometimes you just gotta be a kid, there is all the time in the world to conform. Really do we as grown ups still eat off the floor?

Ummm....as the mom of 2 boys if that good cookie hits the floor and we are not at the local mickey d's there is no stopping them from picking it up short of me tackling them. I just tell myself that all those germs help build up their immune system. They are seldom sick so it must be working!!

Congrats on the good conference...we are STILL waiting for one of those....after the school sent Griffen to the head doctor last year I tend to go in on the defensive. Unfortunately, they have not let me down as I always have to defend him!

I think what this post proves (outside of the whole food thing) is that we tend to base our views on what others say far too much. you know in your heart what kind of kid J. is, whether the teacher confirms or denies it. i'm proud of you and jamie for believing in J. and being so encouraging as parents. THAT is what really matters :)
