we told big j that he could have a puppy for his 9th birthday. we told him this back when we thought sidney wasn't going to make it much longer. she's doing great, but i think a puppy might really annoy her in her old age. plus, we have no yard yet--it's going to be one big mudfest until we get some grass planted this spring. however, we did make a promise. so far he hasn't said anything, and his birthday is this saturday.

i've been looking around at black lab puppies. we'd have to wait until we come back from our ski vacation, but i'm thinking i should tell him we need to wait for the grass to come in. maybe when school gets out so he can take care of it himself?

if you were a kid and you were promised a puppy for your birthday, would you be mad if your mom and dad made you wait a couple months?

what it they got you a new bike while you waited?

Do you think he will be mad? I'm not around him enough to know, but I'm guessing it will be ok. Delayed gratification is a good, good thing (for other people, not so much for me).

That is one dang cute puppy.

We told Molly that she can get a dog once the yard is fenced in. She's waiting patiently. I guess you could use her as an example.

I know you are the black lab type, BUT my godmother's adorable springer spaniel chocolate lab mix had puppies (9) and they are trying desperately to give them away. THEY ARE THE CUTEST DOGS I HAVE EVER SEEN! I want two, but I just can't neglect another dog right now. Let me know if you are interested I can HOOK YOU UP. They can leave mommy April first.

rani, thanks for the tip but there is no way the husband would ever go for anything BUT a pure black lab. he's crazy that way. :)

problem solved. my friend who is a peeper and not a poster called and told me i should find a momma lab who is just now pregnant, and let big J know that he can pick any pup from the litter and bring it home when it is ready in a couple months. the husband likes the idea, too.

and wheee! in 2ish-3ish months we'll have the pitter patter of little black feet in the house!

I was going to say by age nine delaying it for "just the right one" is totally acceptable. Sounds like you found the perfecct answer, trust me wait for grass!!

I guess that will work. I liked my Molly idea, though.
