so it's noon. i almost made it through my first day of kindergarten :) they get out at 1 today. tomorrow, he starts going all day long.

last night i was ironing and my husband put the boys to bed, early for the first time all summer. i overhear my big kindergartner telling his dad that he's a little concerned about school. he says "what if my teacher asks me a hard division question?" so my husband asks him a few math questions to ease his mind, and my son falls asleep. meanwhile, the math questions only intensify the anxiety in my mind. for anyone who knows my son, you know he's a pretty smart kid. his brain scares me. i don't want him to be bored or unchallenged or disappointed in school. he's so excited right now, and he learns like a sponge. i'm worried that school might turn that sponge off. i've had this worry for years...he's always loved numbers and taught himself to read a couple of years ago. Now, he reads the sports section and knows how to multiply. like i said, scary. he doesn't get it from me.

at any rate, we'll see what happens. i remain hopeful, the teacher seems great and told me she will teach him at his level.

in the meantime, i sit here watching the clock. he did indeed ride the bus this morning. i didn't plan it that way, but the kids in our neighborhood were at the bus stop across the street and he just kept looking at them while we were taking pictures in the front yard. i told him if he really, really wanted to ride the bus, he could. his face lit up like christmas and he ran right over there. i followed, trying not to cry. i got to the bus stop and knew i couldn't talk. i wanted to tell our little neighbor girl to take care of him, and make sure he found his teacher. i got down to talk to her and all i could do was choke out her name and give her a hug. she looked a little confused. the bus came, my son piled on board without even looking back. he was ready to roll.

i can't wait to hear all about his first day. 50 more minutes...
