so last night i'm working at the concession stand for the volleyball game at school. what i saw there was SERIOUSLY out-of-control. i have never sold so much pop, candy, super nachos and super dogs in my life. hoards of kids were coming to the stand at 8:30 at night, buying huge bottles of mountain dew, candy bars and super nachos. then they would go buy root beer floats and come back for some more candy. i am, for once, not exaggerating. elementary kids would say "can i have a coke?" (at BED TIME, for crying out loud) and i wanted to say, "NO you can't."
my kids love the concession stand just as much as anyone. they eat their fair amount of sugar and junk. but they only get $1 to spend, and when it's gone, it's gone. the way people were eating last night...honestly, it was horrible. no wonder kids in america are so unhealthy. i felt like i was enabling them to be that way, schlocking an entire concession stand full of crap. there was not one healthy thing in there, unless you count the bottles of $1.25 water. one mom actually said, "$1.25 for water? for that price you might as well buy a pop."
i've worked the baseball concession stand for several summers, and i just have never seen the frenzy the way i did last night. it was a real eye-opener, for sure. all i wanted to do when i came home was eat an apple and brush my teeth. really, that might do the trick for me and the mountain dew. i was pretty disgusted with the stuff by the end of the game.

I totally, 100% agree. I ate lunch with TM's class after the field trip, and was appalled at how many kids ENTIRE lunches were pre-packaged, ultra-refined CRAP. He was the only kid around who had any fresh fruit/veggies to eat.

This should make you smile...
yesterday Griffen said if we spent all of our money on apples then we would be very poor because he loves them so much. I believe it because I cannot keep them in the house. Right now the fave is the honeycrisp ones. Also, on a regular basis my kiddo's try arguing with me about sodas. They think that because someone else's mom lets their kids drink coke then they should be able to also...I just tell them that they can't because I am the meanest mom ever!

rocky, i swear, we are twins AND cousins. jace was mad at me just the other day because his friend was drinking a pop. he asked me why he never gets to drink pop.
my answer
BECAUSE I AM THE MEANEST MOM EVER.

I hate concessions...I was a mean mom last night, too. They got one treat and then auntie bought them ice cream...grrrr.
Um...btw did you get a schedule for concessions... I don't have one. Am I missing something?

rani--you aren't on the schedule. they must know you are going to be a little busy...:)

I agree, my kiddos only get 1.00 at concession stands unless it is the movie theater. I am not the great health food person like Karen is (she is the health queen) but my kids get one pop a week-if that-they often forget to ask. The hardest thing to keep in my frige is fresh fruit, it is gone in like a day and not just a small amount.

The health queen is drinking wine and eating Twizzlers right.now.
Nobody's perfect.

I never thought I would say I am so glad my mom did not let us drink pop growing up. And very little candy. I do remember being mad she wouldn't buy it.
