i've been shooting harley-davidson commercials for the past few days. and i'm sold. not even so much on the bikes--which are gorgeous and powerful and just plain cool. i'm totally, completely sold on the people who ride them. i love big, burly, bearded men with grizzled faces and arms lined with tattoos. i love women who laugh too loud, call me honey and have the confidence to get off the back of the bike and onto the front. these are cool people. they call fellow harley riders "family." they ride for charity. they love the feel of the sun, the smell of the rain and the sound of a v-twin engine (see, i even learned a thing or two). i found myself mesmorized by their stories. one of the sales guys--his silver hair in a ponytail down to his waist--was so excited to show me "his" bikes it was like talking to a little kid about christmas. i wanted to hug him. and i really, really wanted to hug the gruff guy in the back--the guy with the long beard and the soft blue eyes. he reminded me of my dad.
maybe that's why i loved this shoot so much. deep down, i am a mountain man's daughter. i don't belong in fancy social circles. i don't even like them. i'm much happier hanging with the harley rider's and the cowboys, the coal miners and the good ol' boys. i think my dad would be proud to hear me say that.
i know that i am.

I love ya whether you are a mountain babe, a biker girl or a city slicker! I remember that summer in Rapid with you I had to do a story on the rally and it was my first time there ever. I was a little scared of the people but they turned out to be so cool. so carefree. They didn't care what people thought of them or what they had or didn't have. I'm glad you had a good shoot. Maybe someday you'll own of those bikes...

yeah, i'm pretty sure it's your mountain man roots that i'm drawn to as well, my friend...
glad you have the harley guys to work with :))

you have mountain man roots and I have coal miner roots. Isn't it interesting what things trigger our memory. I miss my daddy even if he had a huge space between his front teeth and loved his Pabst almost as much as he loved me. He may have looked different but he was an amazing person and a very good dad.

What a great story. These are the people who have lived life to the fullest and you really listen to the stories they tell. Love people like this who are "true" bikers as opposed to all the foo-foo bikers in our neighborhood. You can't take someone seriously when they have a Harley and a Volvo in the garage at the same time plus the 50'boat and swimming pool with grotto. They have Harleys, but don't really deserve the respect to ride a Harley.

I loved this entry. I also have soft spot for those true biker dudes & dudettes. There is something very attractive about a free spirit. And those Volvo drivers, they just really want that too, to be a free spirit.
