for 36 years i have chewed my fingernails. i also rip on the cuticles, which looks just lovely. i've never had to file my nails, because, well...i've never had any. when i saw my cousin (i only have one cousin, she's a year younger than me and i love her like a sister) a couple weeks ago, i had serious nail envy. she has these beautiful squared-off nails with french tips and gloss. her toes are even perfectly manicured, and she's got a little design painted on each big toe. she's always been way more of a girl than i am. i think she was the first one to ever apply mascara to my lashes.

anyway, i vowed to stop chewing my nails after that trip. and except for a little slip that involved my pinky finger and a long stoplight, i pretty much have. i bought some clear polish, and that helps me not want to gnaw on them so much. yesterday i decided to buy my first NAIL FILE. i just wasn't sure exactly what to do with it.

do you just saw it back and forth or up and down or what? one nail is kinda pointy and the next one is kinda flat, and none of them look at all like my cousin's. how pathetic is it that a grown woman can't operate a nail file? are there support groups for this kind of thing?

sigh.

it all just makes me want to...chew my nails off.

I kind of have that bad habit too. Sometimes my nails will look great and I'll have them manicured, painted, etc. But if i'm stressed, worried, anxious, I start picking away. About the nail file? Not sure either. Honestly, the sound it makes as its sawing away at my nails gives me the creeps. Kind of like nails being scratched on a chalkboard. So I steer clear of the nail file whenever I can.

yeah, that sound gives me goose bumps.

is it possible to file without the sound?

The best bet is to pay someone else to deal with them. It's only like ten bucks if you add it on to a pedicure. I have them shape and buff them, no polish.

i only chew my thumbs. that's my guilty pleasure, since i've been a nail chewer my whole life.

but filing is hard. i agree with Karen to let somebody do it, every time i try mine kind of crack and break off.

maybe take me with you.

Or we could all do it together in Florida...

Carey, I hear ya. They do have a point about getting a mani. Once you watch them how they do it, for the most point you will have an idea what to do with your own nail file during the times you don't have someone do it. Personally, I wish I could afford to have mani pedi's all the time. My nails rock when I do!

Hey you never said a word about my nails! My advice is also to have someone else do them! And oh by the way I seem to remember applying the mascara. I even think there may be a picture of it somewhere??? I may have to start digging for it!
