i didn't go to high school in a small town, so the small town coronation ceremony was a new experience for me. starting with my son coming home with a note that said he had been selected by the senior class to be one of the...hmmm. i'm not even sure what they are called. one of the kids who dresses up and gets to be part of coronation and ride on the float during the football game. anyway, he was pretty excited about it until he found out he had to wear a tie.

anyway, these are pictures from monday night, when they crowned the king and queen. since the whole senior class is made up of something like 15 kids, all the girls and all the boys were up for the honor, rather than nominating three or four and having a big school vote like we did.

so anyway, these are pictures of the king and queen...and you can see big j standing there in his tie, itching to take it off and untuck his shirt. trust me, by the end of the night, he looked like a bachelor party gone bad.

then there is the bottom picture, of both my handsome little men. little j was upset that his big brother didn't get the crown. then he was upset when i told him i never got the crown.
when he asked why, i told him that our class was really big and we all had to pick just one person.

he says "oh. and you didn't have enough friends, right mom?"

sigh.

It looks like they crowned the girl with the most cleavage. Shoot, no wonder we never got picked!

You tell little J that you had the perfect number of perfect friends. Then tell him that the prom queen married a geezer and now has wrinkles, just like the rest of us.

"first grade attendants" that's what they are called. I was one in 1979, I believe. I remember dressing up and riding on the float. I remember pulling on the sleeve of the boy I had to walk with, because he was walking too slowly. I didn't get the crown when I was senior, either. Life goes on. Then you grow up and realize your small town traditions are kind of wacky and make no sense to people who did not grow up here :)
