so a few weeks ago the husband came home from mens' league hockey and I heard the tell-tale signs of ice cubes clinking around.

i happened to be texting a friend at the time and i said "sounds like the husband injured himself again trying to keep up with those college boys."

we lol'd.

yesterday he went to the doctor and found out he broke his thumb. serious? he's been using that thumb without a whimper for two weeks now. heck, the man scored three goals at mens' league last week. WITH A BROKEN THUMB. surely there must be some mistake?

he's having surgery tomorrow and will be out of commission for at least six weeks. no hockey playing, no roughhousing, no thumb wars.

but he really got my attention when he told me no skiing.

argh. we had plans to ski in colorado over Christmas. NOW the injury really hurts. stupid mens' league hockey.

this reaction proves three things: a) i am selfish b) the husband needs to complain more when he's hurt c) i should never LOL when i hear ice cubes clinking around

on top of all this, i have been wondering about surgery etiquette. i mean...it's a thumb. but it's surgery. but it's on a thumb. but it's surgery. on a thumb.

sigh.

do i take the day off, drive him to the hospital, sit through the surgery and drive him home? or do i drop him off, come home and pick him up when he calls? then, do i leave for a christmas party in sioux falls or do i stay here and coddle the thumb?

if it was a kidney or a heart, i'd totally be here. i'd even be here for an arm or leg.

but a thumb?

what's the call on that?

bobbi assures me a good wife sits in the waiting room even for a thumb. even if it is a thumb on the non-dominant hand.

i was going to say think of me tomorrow as i sit bored in the waiting room for 3 hours but then i remembered that is the selfish wife rearing her ugly head.

what i meant to say is: think and pray for the husband tomorrow as he undergoes surgery on his thumb.

amen.

I missed this, yes you need to sit for the thumb, I hope you did. Umm after the first day not so much...just make sure and ask about it. Yes to the xmas party, he would understand, and if not well...it isn't YOUR thumb

i took the husband and was there for him in the recovery room. i may have slipped out while they were hacking away at him :) he is doing just fine, the only thing suffering is his wardrobe. he's slitting sleeves on his old crappy shirts so he can wear them over his hand cast thingy.
