we've got a dilemma. my 6-year-old is hooked on playing video games on my computer. we limit his time, set rules, make him earn minutes and generally exasperate him when it comes to this very sore subject. in his perfect world, we would all just leave him alone so he could play on the computer forever.
so for the past month, on the weekends, he gets up at around 5 am and tiptoes downstairs for his peace and quiet time with the computer. we usually bust him and make him go back to bed, in a flood of tears and door slamming.
so today, a friday, there is no school. i wake up at 3 AM to the sounds of mario brothers coming up the stairs. are you kidding me? i tell him it's three in the morning and to go back to bed. an hour later, he's sneaking past my bedroom on his way back downstairs. i give him points for persistence, but man. i honestly wish i could ban all evil electronic devices from this household. if my kid was getting up at 3 am to do something constructive, like practice hockey or read a book, i might actually be proud of his ambition. but i'm not. i hate video games. no, i don't hate them. I HATE THEM WITH EVERY BONE IN MY BODY.
just had to get that out. whew. i feel better now.
have a great day.

i would say something really really hardcore if it wasn't 6 am, with my sleeping friend in the living room, and me HERE greedily lapping up blog posts i have missed for the last 2 days.

I think you can change settngs in your computer so that whenever you turn it on you have to put in a username and password just to start it up. Maybe that would help solve the problem. I know how you feel about this video game obsession boys/men seem to have. Blair and his 8 year old son would "bond" playing violent games, sometimes for a couple days straight. He did not restrict the amount of time Cody played, and that was all he wantd to do while he was at Blair's house. I woud try in vain to get them to play outside together, but it was like they were unconfortable and couldn't wait to get back on the computer.

Whoever invented them anyway?! I don't mind them at times but when they're getting played when it's a beautiful day outside, then I have a problem. I have to put a time limit on Brody's playing time too. I guess we're stuck with them, whether we like it or not.

I'm pretty sure locking the computer won't work cause I'm guessing HE knows far more about computers than you do. hehe. So I'm going to take a card from what you do so well and look at the positive side. Is he playing the violent games or can you find games that will build his intelligence? Maybe start teaching him some programming languages so he can get a head start on his college courses? He's a brilliant kid so he can probably kick some butt in that area. What I'm saying is there must a way to turn this into a positive!
And after that, go old fashioned and steal the cord that plugs it into the wall :-)
