one week since my last post. sorry 'bout that. we had the whole non-surfing debacle (grr) and then my mom was here for a week. i tell her she always leaves my house looking better than when she came, cuz she always does work around here. this trip was no different, thanks mom.

so. things to tell. i'll start with the furry members of the family. CrosDog (funny how everything gets a nickname around here) is growing into a giant hound. she knows how to sit and stay but for some reason she has a tough time with "come". she usually just sits there, looking at us, hoping maybe we'll come to her instead. her biggest stress is that she can't seem to make any of the other pets like her. sidney, pounce and zoe have formed an Anti-Crosby alliance. the more they avoid her, the harder she tries. it's like junior high all over again.

the kids are good. we have been learning about australian reptiles, kangaroos, lion fish, box jellyfish, blue-ringed octupuses...all kinds of fascinating reports flying out of here for school. if these teachers only knew that little j doesn't do ANYTHING on a small scale they might understand my sadness when he is told to "report on an australian reptile" for show and tell. that little show and tell project turned into an 8-page book complete with pictures, maps, bullet points and dancing girls. i am so NOT looking forward to his first science fair project.

in other news, the husband is going to watch the huskers play sdsu this weekend. i tossed and turned this decision over several times, but decided to stay here and not worry about finding dog, cat and kid sitters. besides, my bike is calling my name...
i will say a hearty GO JACKS though. i hope they don't get killed as bad as everyone thinks they will get killed. the husband is calling a 55-6 score.

happy weekend!

today i am supposed to be on a plane with my husband heading for a weekend of sun, fun and karen.

stupid hurricane igor.

the surf camp was cancelled due to hurricane waves and dangerous surfing for beginners. make no mistake, i could tell the surfer chick cancelling the trip was thrilled about the monster waves.

me, not so much.

so. bummer. the husband had to switch shifts with all kinds of people to make the trip work, so now he switched back and is working today. my mom is here because she was coming to watch the boys for us, and so we are doing some projects around here like painting the foundation of our house, etc.

not exactly surfing, but it will be good to get it done. sigh.

on the good side. i won't be eaten by sharks or die in a fiery plane crash or get squeezed by octopuses or stung by jellyfish.

see? there's always a good side.

from the fall eddie bauer catalog, people. i am quite sure those would qualify as "pegged" pants back in the day. circa carey crouse, 1990ish, without the heels.

i called it. and yes, you who scoff the jegging...i also call that YOU will be rolling them up above the ankle, perhaps even folding the cuff over and pegging them.

again.

i just had a client try to schedule me for a meeting next friday. i told her sure and asked what time.

then i looked at my calendar.

next friday is september 17. i can't go to a meeting. i will be on an airplane to north carolina where i will meet up with karen and her husband and we will feed the sharks.

holy smokes.

that is coming up fast.

and just so you know how serious the husband and i are about this whole shark fest, we made up our will last week and are seeing a lawyer tomorrow.

not exactly positive thinking, is it?

it's a good thing i write my blog in all lowercase letters. the cap button on my computer won't cap things anymore.

which could be a problem, me being a writer and all.

i'm thinking my graphic designer can just go through all the stuff i write and cap the first letter of every sentence for me? no?

taking a little lunch break here and a break from "real" writing to "fun" writing. i don't have a topic, but random thoughts seem to be a good theme so here goes.

it's the husband's birthday today. he told me last night that his goal is to be in the best shape of his life when he hits 45--just three years from now. bummer. i was kind of planning on letting things slide a bit on my end and just coasting into old age. but i don't want to be one of those couples where people say "wow, how come that hot guy is married to that old bag?" my new plan is to keep the fridge well stocked with ice cream and root beer. the husband can't resist, and perhaps the nightly snacks will counteract with his daily boot camp drills.

the kids. well, they seem to be doing fine. you really don't get a lot out of them about what happens during the school day, do you? standard answers are "good" "nothing" and "i don't remember." little j is happy as a clam (are clams really that happy?) in his multi-age class that combines first and second grade kids. i let him wear his five fake tattoos to school on monday, and they didn't kick him out. so i guess things are good.

big j seems ok, too. again, not a lot of info. the husband says he's made friends with a large, smack-talking jock of a kid on the football team. he was a little worried about big j's association with the kid, since last year the boy told a coach to fxxx off. i say i'm glad big j has a thug on his side. it's always good to be friends with a few bad asses, in case you get in trouble in middle school.

the puppy is growing like a weed. she's not quite potty-trained yet (sadly) but she loves to sleep QUIETLY in her kennel all night long and even goes in there on her own during the day when she needs a little siesta. i can tell the husband is a bit worried about her 8 week old fetching skills. so far, she runs after her fuzzy squeaky toy, shakes it to death, chews on it for good measure, and eventually makes her way back to fetch again, maybe. if she feels like it. and if a shiny object doesn't pass her by.

as for me. i am loving the hermit life. i have been blissfully alone without meetings or a need to see people from 8:30 until 3:15 for three days now. i get lots of work done. i ride my bike. i eat noodles out of the pan for lunch. i blog at lunch time.

yep. life is good.

time to fetch the dog.
