so most of you know little j got pretty lucky this weekend. he came out of a rollover on the interstate with hardly a scratch--just a lump on his noggin and a little neck injury. it could have been such a different story. it's hard to believe that five people and a dog walked away from an accident like this. i have the good Lord to thank, and the fact that the driver made sure all the kids were buckled up.
little j is doing fine and we hope to never take a phone call from an ambulance driver again. thanks for all the thoughts and prayers...and please please please wear your seatbelts. they obviously save lives!
woke up to our first snow this morning and here are a few things i am thinking about:
*winter coats, hats and boots are apparently not necessary in middle school (i remember trying to convince my mom of this very same thing). i didn't want to be the bad mom sending my kid off to school in a sweatshirt, so i made big j wear the ski coat. i noticed about 20 kids entering the building in tee shirts as i dropped him off this morning. sigh.
*weiner dogs do not like snow.
*weiner dogs also do not like rain, wind, cold, dew, ice or loud noises.
*weiner dogs might actually be cats.
*it is much easier to write about holiday promotions for my job when there is snow on the ground.
*i am itching to put on the skis.
*something about snow makes me want to cook a real meal. i am hoping this feeling goes away by five.
*snow always makes me think about hobos and how much it would suck to be one. let's all say a prayer for the hobos, ok?
*pretty sure we don't have a pair of matching gloves in the house.
*no matter where i hide it, the husband always finds the old green coat i bought him when we were dating 18 years ago. yes, you all know the one. he found it about 9:30 this morning and hasn't taken it off since.
*it has nothing to do with him being sentimental. it has everything to do with him being part hobo.
*another prayer for the hobos, please.
*i am wondering about putting up Christmas lights on the next warm day. where did i put them all? do they still work? can i convince the j boys to do it?
*and about Christmas. what in the world am i going to get bobbi this year? it is always hard to top the stuffed lion, the live baby lizard or the cupcake hole maker.
*snow also makes me procrastinate. back to work, i go.
so pheasant season is here and for the first time in 13 years, the husband is hunting without his trusty black lab, sidney. he tried taking her with him this weekend to just ride along and sit in the truck, but as soon as she figured out they were hunting without her, she barked for them to come get her. she is not a dog to waste her words and the husband said he could hear her barking about a mile away.
it totally broke my heart.
he said they came back with pheasants and hid one in the weeds near the truck so sidney could "find" it. she had a hard time even with that--this coming from a dog that could out hunt any dog, any time, back in her day. walking through tall weeds is too hard and it seems her sight and nose just aren't what they used to be.
fortunately, she does enjoy a good sunbeam and a chew bone. we'll have to make the most of those on the weekends now, maybe throw in a bowl of ice cream every now and then. she won't like staying home with me, but we'll make the best of it. that fireplace sounds better than a freezing day walking fields anyway, right? it might take some convincing, but i'm determined to make her HAPPY to have to stay.
that's what i will be doing this fall. stop by and visit us on the front porch. sid and i will be talking about the glory days when she brought in all the birds and left the professional dogs in the dust.
oh, hi. i just spent a full two hours in jeans and boots and am happily back in my sweatpants. i am definitely becoming a j boy.
speaking of j boys. the big one started hockey tonite, four wee days after football ended. his football team won the city championship, i have a photo somewhere of 12 smiling boys clad in purple. yay vikings!
the other j boy just got back from a presentation from the school board on his best of show placing at the state fair. i noticed on his art that he didn't erase the nose very well and there was a piece in there that was drawn with pencil and not crayon. apparently the judges are soft on second graders. that just would not have cut it at the ADDY awards.
the weenie dog is keeping me on my toes with that little bladder of his. i spend wayyyyyyyyy to much time walking around the yard saying "gunner go potty. good boy gunner." the potty-training part is like child birth--you forget everything that goes into it. i think we have it down and then i step on a little tiny itty bitty puddle in the kitchen. i never know if it's dog pee or water until i look at the bottom of my sock and see yellow. so you might not want to borrow my socks anytime soon. i am a little concerned because he hasn't pooped since this morning THAT I HAVE SEEN. hmm. aren't you glad we got a puppy so you could read about all this?
this past weekend was a nice relaxing one. i see chaos on the horizon so i am enjoying it while i can. the husband, little j and i did go to the old stomping grounds in montrose to run a charity 5K for an old friend that passed away. good turnout and great people, it was nice to catch up.
big j and the husband went to ref camp on sunday so big j could get his certificate to start being a hockey referee. he has to pass his online test and then he's ready to start earning money. $20 per game this winter. he is one excited dude. the husband said he answered questions the high school kids couldn't even answer. i hope these people know what they are up against. big j is ALL about rules. i can just see him going hardcore on the mini-mites. i am a little worried about the insane hockey parents screaming at my kid, but big says he'll just kick them out.:)
that's about that. thanks for stopping!
sorry it took you so long to tell you about our newest family member. his names is gunner and he's a mini weiner dog, the long-haired version. we fell in love with him and grandma kathy and thought he looked like a great Christmas present for the boys.
so far he is a pretty good boy but he is definitely going to have a mind of his own. everything i have read about dachsunds tells me they are stubborn. they were bred to kill badgers and the tenacity and stubborness helps them survive. i am hoping his labrador sisters will teach him a thing or two about pleasing others and doing whatever they say. ha.
for those of you keeping count, we now have three dogs and two cats. we are nuts. sidney dog and old zoe cat would agree with you.
come meet gunner in person. just don't bring your pet badger. he might kill it. :)
